Narcissism Bites

Understanding and Treating Narcissism and Co-narcissism

Narcissists are people who have an inflated sense of their own importance and a deep need for admiration. However behind this mask of impressive confidence lies a fragile self esteem that is very vulnerable to criticism. In the extreme are those with Narcissistic Personality Disorder which leads them to behave in socially distressing ways causing stress and anguish in those with whom they have relationships.

Many of the clients we see in therapy have at least one narcissistic parent and have been damaged by them. As a result many of our clients have themselves entered into a relationship with a narcissist and through their own feelings and responses enable the narcissist to continue their controlling and often abusive behaviour.  Helping the client recognize this phenomenon and their own behaviours, while giving the client tools to escape the relationship, helps the client address their own co-narcissistic tendencies and move on to healthier relationships.

In this workshop you will learn:

The two-part program includes lecture, case synopses, participatory experiments, short demonstrations of specific interventions, and ample opportunity for your questions. Workshop materials include current articles, a checklist of characteristics of the narcissistic personality, and additional resources.  The first session will be more discussion and lecture and the second session will be more consultative and participatory.  Join us for the first session or both.

“We have different approaches to therapy – Brian’s is more cognitive and mine is more experiential. We frequently consult with each other on useful approaches. We have a particular interest in narcissism and co-narcissism since so many of our clients have been injured by narcissists“.
